World’s Finest #113 (Green Arrow)

World’s Finest #113 (1960)
by Dave Wood & Lee Elias

The Green Arrow stories of this period are not exactly great. This one isn’t either, but it introduces a character that will be surprisingly important DECADES later: Miss Arrowette.

Which is not just her codename, by the way: it’s a title!
Because everything, EVERYTHING revolves around archery in this period of Green Arrow… including beauty pageants.

You regular reminder that Green Arrow used to be a total Batman ripoff…

…and that he used to suck at this.

That’s when Miss Arrowette decides to help. Just like Green Arrow she has tons of trick arrows, but her gimmick is being a girl.

Oh hello 1960s sexism, it’s never a pleasure.

Although, judging by her second outing… maaaaybe she’s not cut out for this.

While this is immensely stupid, I almost admire the creativity to come up with so many makeup-related arrows.

Emphasis on “almost” admire.

And that’s the end of it! Surely a story worthy of 6 whole pages.

Historical significance: 6/10
Zero impact on the Silver Age, but in the modern era… see below.

Silver Age-ness: 10/10
When else could these arrow exist and NOT be a parody!?

Does it stand the test of time? 0/10
Even without the sexism, this is a very barebone story with basically no redeeming quality.

Miss Arrowette shows up a couple of times in other issues of World’s Finest I’ll probably review.

She completed dropped out of the face of comic books until 1998, where she was a supporting character on Young Justice as the mother of teenage superhero Arrowette.
And of course being written by Peter David, she was AWESOME and… not all there.

Seriously, the relationship between Arrowette and her mother was very interesting.
Only Peter David could take a joke Silver Age character like Miss Freaking Arrowette and give her depth!

While it wasn’t OFFICIALLY stated that Green Arrow is her daughter’s real father… well…

  1. Yes, I find it very easy to believe that post-Silver Age Oliver “Can’t keep it in his pants” Queen is Cissie’s father.
