Jimmy Olsen 144

JIMMY OLSEN 144 (1971)
by Jack Kirby
cover by Jack Kirby & Neal Adams

What I like about the cover is that Superman doesn’t seem interested into saving Jimmy and the Newsboy Legion. Like, at all.

This is a Loch Ness Monster story, so I’m anticipating lots of corny balloons with the accent.

According to the credits, inker Vince Colletta would be Scottish.
He was actually born in Italy and I can’t find any relationship whatsoever with Scotland, so I have no idea what Kirby was thinking.
Then again, I wonder about that every single issue.

Also: Kirby was editing too!? I have sources crediting E. Nelson Bridwell as a co-editor, but if Kirby as editing his own work… maybe I can understand SOME of the madness.

Anyway, the “Loch Trevor Monster” (which we don’t actually see) wrecks a boat, and that’s apparently front page news in Scotland.

And also in America, at least according to Morgan Edge.

It’s pretty rare for me to agree 100% with Jimmy Olsen.

Either Morgan Edge is really into this monster story, or he really wants to get all these losers out of the country for as long as possible.
Also, Kirby… “Ghetto Guppie”? Seriously!?

Little known fact: the flip phone was invented by Intergang in the 70s.
For some reason it didn’t catch on.

You know what could make this comic a true classic, something that will stand the test of time? Disco hippies!

At first I thought these were the Hairies joining the party. Notably, NOBODY here finds them strange.

Are those guys meant to represent someone in particular? I get the feeling Kirby is drawing someone from reference, but I’m at a loss.

You might be shocked to know that the guys carrying around Kirby tech are not actually musicians.

We won’t learn ANYTHING about this sub-plot this issue.
Because apparently it’s more important to make Scrapper even more insufferable than he already was.

I’m honestly surprised all these people are supposed to be from the same species.

Gabby is supposed to be, what, ten years old? At least? Why is he drawn like this!?

If you thought the friendly Scottish guide is actually the bad guy, congratulations, you’ve read more than one comic book in your life.

Time for Discount Loch Ness Monster to finally show up!

Is it just me or does he look like another Kirby creation?

If you thought the girl with white hair was supposed to be a potential love interest, think again.

And so we end with Jimmy Olsen to vow he’s going to do something.

That would be a nice change of pace since he’s done NOTHING this entire issue!!!

We also have a two-page “““story””” in the “Strange Stories of the DNA Project” feature.

I can’t make heads of tails of it.

Okay so I GUESS “Probe Six” finds an underground civilization and is killed, than nobody is able to find either the explorers or the civilization.

I can’t believe I’m saying it, but I would’ve preferred having a couple of Kirby collages instead of this… thing.

Historical significance: 1/10
The “Loch Trevor Monster” actually shows up once in Action Comics.

 Silver Age-ness: 2/10
I think the Monster is a product of the DNA Project and not anything supernatural, but if it was it wouldn’t be anything weird for the Silver Age.

Does it stand the test of time? 0/10
This is a Newsboy Legion story more than it is a Jimmy Olsen story. I don’t think I need to elaborate.
