World’s Finest #118 (1961)
by Dave Wood & Lee Elias
Because hopefully nobody demanded it, the return of Miss Arrowette.
I haven’t read many of the early Green Arrow stories, so the logistics of the Arrow Signal are lost on me. It’s obviously not a spotlight projected on the sky like the Bat-Signal… is it just a flashy arrow!?
It has to be, because the police has to fire a SECOND Arrow Signal when there isn’t an answer.
In the world of Green Arrow, soap bubbles beat firecrackers.
Sounds legit.
I continue to be thoroughly unimpressed by Green Arrow.
But it turns out that’s not the real Green Arrow! It’s all part of a plan…
…a very stupid plan. There are SO many ways this is idiotic:
1) you’re already in their lair AND you have a radio, why aren’t you escaping?
2) why don’t you just have the police arrest the impostors?
3) how is anyone being fooled by the switch!?
4) what do the crooks gain from impersonating Green Arrow since he sucks so much?
5)“Great Thumping Bowstrings” is the worst catchphrase I’ve heard, WHICH IS SAYING SOMETHING.
Also, if you’re going to impersonate Green Arrow… at a charity event where he’s supposed to perform… maybe pick an impersonator who can use a bow!?
Wait… in an earlier scene Green Arrow was talking to the cops. You mean to tell me only the chief has been informed but not the other cops!?
Everyone always makes fun of Green Arrow’s boxing glove arrow, but have you heard about his miniature bow!?
Now that Green Arrow and Speedy have escaped, they can rescue Miss Arrowette.
As for how they managed to find Miss Arrowette… well I suspect you’ve read a comic book before so you probably imagined it was thanks to the perfume.
And that’s it! Apparently the lesson should be that Miss Arrowette isn’t cut out for hero work… but I still think the problem is Green Arrow sucks.
Historical significance: 0/10
Deservedly forgotten.
Silver Age-ness: 8/10
Slightly less ridiculous arrow than last time, but not by much.
Does it stand the test of time? 0/10
About as much as any Green Arrow story of the time.
