Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes #320 (1985) – Part 2
plot by Paul Levitz
dialogue by Mindy Newell
pencils by Dan Jurgens
This is a story about Sun Boy trying to get laid.
The first page also has a reference to Professor X and Kitty Pryde from the X-Men. It’s supposed to be cute, but… wasn’t she like fifteen in this period? And he was her professor… yeesh.
This is ALSO from the first page! Just because the Legion has left the 70s doesn’t mean it’s not any less horny.
(Cargg is Triplicate Girl’s planet, so he’s basically offering her a part in “Threesome: The Movie”)
And no, I really don’t think I’m reading too much into this.
Unfortunately for Sun Boy, he’s plotblocked when he spots Colossal Boy in a date with Science Police officer Gigi Cusimano. Which is a bit awkward because A) he’s married B) Sun Boy has a thing for Gigi.*
*Source: she’s a girl and she’s breathing.
At first he things he might be blowing this out of proportions…
…except, well.
At least the creepy guy gets his comeuppance.
He decides to confront Colossal Boy about this the next day, with no success.
I would not be surprised to learn you DO snuggle with all your female friends, Sun Boy.
Gigi is not any more helpful, alternating with flirting with her colleague Dvron and Sun Boy.
Dvron is the rookie from Superboy #207, by the way, although there is no footnote.
Much to his surprise, Gigi freely admits going out with both Colossal Boy and Dvron, complaining how Sun Boy treats her as disposable while at the same time expecting her to stay loyal.
So is Colossal Boy cheating on his shapeshifting wife? Nah, this is just a trick to teach Sun Boy a lesson.
The blonde in the opening page was Yera all along. Which was completely useless for Gigi’s entire trick, by the way.
You cannot convince me this is not a kink that the newlyweds share and they decided to involve Gigi for the heck of it.
Legion significance: CENSORED
I suppose this has SOME impact on Gigi Cusimano’s development, but come on. It’s not like her relationship with Sun Boy was ever shown to be deep.
Silver Age-ness:
Superman would be SO proud of his friends.
Does it stand the test of time?
There definitely are parts of the Internet where this story takes a wildly different turn.
Reminds me of X MEN#3 where Xavier (who was probably 30 at the time) harbored romantic feelings for the equally teenage Jean Grey.
If Gim wants a happily married life, he should memorize the following:
“Yera, honey, I don’t need you to shapeshift into anyone else – I love you just the way you are!”
