Uncanny Avengers #21

Uncanny Avengers #21 (2014)
by Rick Remeder & Daniel Acuña

While Hickman was handling a massive storyline with apocalyptic stakes on the New Avengers series, Rick Remeder was doing ANOTHER one in a different Avengers book.

But luckily for me, this one BARELY uses Doctor Doom so I can get over it quickly.
Also I liked this FAR less than the Hickman one.

All you need to know is that the Celestials are about to attack Earth.

Doctor Doom is one of the various super-geniuses that has been called to create a shield that can stop even the Celestials.
You have to love Doom having the audacity to call SOMEONE ELSE a windbag.

When the Celestial is about to step on the planet, the barrier holds.

And that’s basically all we see of Doom in this issue, since the plan to stop the Celestials involve having Rogue (who is in the Avengers in this period) absorb the powers of various heroes…

…and letting Thor be Thor.

But this is a Kang storyline, so the issue ends with several of his time-displaces allies showing up to fight the Avengers… including DOOM 2099 !!!

I’ve mentioned before that Doom 2099 is one of my absolute favorite comics AND one of my favorite interpretations of Doctor Doom.
Really the only two reasons I haven’t done a Doom 2099 retrospective yet are that I already have way too much stuff to review and that Marvel Unlimited doesn’t have all the high quality scans yet.
But I’ll definitely do it at some point.
Unfortunately, the only time he showed up in my reviews it was an abysmal atrocity.

So this could’ve been a chance to have Doom 2099 have a PROPER meeting with the original Doctor Doom… and the only time they’re in the same panel THEY DON’T EVEN INTERACT.
This is all the Doctor Doom we get in #22.

Both Doctor Doom and Doom 2099 disappear from the rest of the storyline without an explanation.

Now I’m not saying this is the reason why I don’t care for the Remender run… but it certainly doesn’t help.

Doom significance: 0/10
Doom has little time for Kang’s shenanigans.

Silver Age-ness: N/A
Does it stand the test of time? N/A
Not a real review, since this is barely a cameo, so no scores. Completely missing the chance to have Doom 2099 even TALK to his younger counterpart is a real crime, though.

It was a Doombot all along
I wouldn’t put past Doom the idea that saving the world from space gods is beneath him.

Times Doom has saved the world: 19
He helps, so it counts. It is interesting to note that at this point calling Doom whenever the heroes are assembled to save Earth from cosmic threats is already a tradition.

Crazy tech
The shield IS impressive, considering how brain-meltingly powerful the Celestials are… but considering we’ve already seen Doom has personal shields that can hold back MULTIPLE Celestials… he’s not sharing his best toys here. This also makes it more likely that it’s just a Doombot.
