Lois Lane #137

LOIS LANE #137 (1974)
by Cary Bates & John Rosenberger
Cover by Bob Oksner

The last issue of “Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane” before she transitions to Superman Family.
As the cover says, it’s been the wildest ride in history!

Just how obsessed is Metropolis with Superman? You can’t even get a cup of coffee without having to stare at a gigantic poster of him!

Am I the only one who thinks this is actually kind of creepy? Especially with the idea of Superman constantly watching you with his “smiling eyes”.

At this point I’m pretty sure that Silver Age Perry White has absolutely no idea on how to run a newspaper and just goes with any random thought that pops into his head.

They just happen to run into a man who mysteriously aged overnight.

That’s not enough for a Metropolis headline… to be fair, that’s not anywhere near the weirdest thing that ever happened in the city… so while Clark flies off as Superman to find other news, Lois investigates the place that seemingly killed the rapidly aged man: the subway.

She takes a train that is mysteriously empty (???) and the train goes so fast that Lois loses consciousness…

…and goes into space (!!!!!)…

…then into another dimension where Lois talks with TELEPATHIC DINOSAURS.
You can’t make this stuff up!!!

Turns out the dinosaurs were just alien refugees!!!

Also the dinosaurs didn’t go extinct not because of a meteor but because they killed each other!!!
Is this comic dinoshaming a mass extinction? Who commissioned this story, Big Asteroids!?

AND THAT IS WHY WAR IS BAD.

You passed out on the train once the gallons of LSD you took over the years had their toll, didn’t you Lois?

I can’t think of a better way to end the Lois Lane series than this crap.

I can only imagine the reaction of the readers after that issue of the Daily Planet.

Historical significance: 0/10
Take a moment to consider that they knew this would be the last Lois Lane issue and still went on with this as the cover story.

Silver Age-ness: 4∞/10
Consider it a lifetime achievement for having broken the scale with a score higher than infinity more often than any other series. But the story is unbelievably absurd too… “the dinosaurs are actually alien refugees who killed each other, and their descendants from another dimension hijack the Metropolis subway to teach humans to make love and not war” would warrant the score regardless.

Does it stand the test of time? 0/10
Even a dinosaur would write a more coherent story.

 Stupid Lois Lane moment
The modern dinosaurs make no reference to their ancestors killing each other, that’s completely a Lois deduction. She’s clearly in the pocket of Big Asteroids.
