Action Comics 376

ACTION COMICS 376 (1969)
by Leo Dorfman & Kurt Schaffenberger

Continuing the story about the teacher blinded by Supergirl, in the last Action Comics issue of her run.

Last time the students hated the teacher, but now that it’s public knowledge that she’s blind because of Supergirl… everybody hates Supergirl.

After recapping the first part, Supergirl takes the teacher to a jungle doctor who can cure blindness. (???)

And of course it doesn’t work.

Remember the World Science Center from last issue?

IT’S A FREAKING ROCKET SHIP!

Try not to be shocked, but it turns out aliens are behind this whole thing.

Including accidentally blinding the scientist with their defense satellites. (WTF!?)

Well at least they’re kind enough to cure her blindness.

And now we get to the truly bonkers plan of the aliens. See, they kidnapped the scientists because they want to SUCK THEIR BRAINS DRY.

I feel you, buddy.

The teacher thinks the aliens are trustworthy, so she volunteers to get her brain sucked.

Except… surprise! This wasn’t the teacher but Supergirl in disguise!

The aliens spent YEARS infiltrating Earth so that they could steal half a dozen scientists.

And they are exposed by the fact that their fake building didn’t have a lightning rod.

So, uhm, are we SURE that the brain-sucking machine didn’t an effect on Supergirl?

Nah, she seems fine.

Well at least she cures the teacher for real, so that’s good.

On the other hand she doesn’t use this device to cure every OTHER human from blindness, so…

Historical significance: 0/10
No, of course we’re not ever going to mention that Stanhope had a huge science building built by aliens.

Silver Age-ness: 8/10
I have seen dumber alien plans, but not by much.

Does it stand the test of time? 0/10
This one lacks the minor positive touches of the first part. The clue being the lack of a lightning rod is good enough, but everything else was painfully predictable.
