Jimmy Olsen 94

JIMMY OLSEN 94 (1966)
by unknown & George Papp

I could not find a reliable source for the writer. I wonder why.

Jimmy is writing an article about a new supervillain called “The Bug”, who commits bug-themed crimes.

Lana Lang is worried that he might target Insect Queen, so wants to give her ring to Jimmy for safekeeping… and he ends up using it immediately.

So the story is basically Insect Guy versus Insect Robots.

Spider-Man this ain’t.

AAAAAHHHHHH

No Insect Queen story is complete without some body horror and repulsive panels, even if she doesn’t show up.

The Bug “tricks” Jimmy into transforming into a ladybug…

…except it turns out this is Supergirl. Why did she need to disguise herself to stop this idiot!?!?

Well at least the story ends with Jimmy acknowledging that he utterly sucks as a hero.
He sucks at pretty much everything, but hey, baby steps.

This is one of the issues with the Statement of Ownership.
The fact that this series was selling over 500,000 copies a month makes me depressed.

Historical significance: 0/10
I don’t think The Bug shows up again.

Silver Age-ness: 10/10
So… Lana can become a superheroine at any moment and the entire world knows about it?

Does it stand the test of time? 0/10
This is even noticeably shorter than other stories of the time.

Superpowers count: 38
Adding “Insect shapeshifting” to the ever-growing list.

Stupid Jimmy Olsen moment
Jimmy himself points out that he really sucks at this whole hero thing.

Interesting letters: yes, 1960s Spider-Man was CLEARLY ripping off Jimmy Olsen. The audacity of publishing this letter in THIS issue…
