Crisis On Infinite Earths #7-8

Crisis On Infinite Earths #7 (1985)
by Marv Wolfman & George Perez

The Crisis has caught up with the Legion in the most painful way possible.

I’ve already covered Supergirl’s death in her own retrospective, so I will only be focusing on the other Legion connections.

Mostly because the strike force assembled to take down the Anti-Monitor in his own dimension includes several Legionnaires: besides Supergirl, both Mon-El and Wildfire are present.
I kind of wonder why Ultra Boy isn’t among them, since this team is explicitly made of the strongest heroes and he’s up there with Mon-El.

Unfortunately the Legionnaires don’t get much to do.

Wildfire is among the first heroes to learn of Supergirl’s death.

Brainiac 5 is present at Supergirl’s funeral. Presumably other Legionnaires may be there, although we are not shown. The blonde consoling him looks like she could be Saturn Girl.

This is also the issue when we learn that the Controllers are descendants of the Guardians Of The Universe.
Weirdly enough, after Crisis the Controllers will mostly be seen in the 20th century so it’s sometimes difficult to consider them as Legion characters.
Even though they were introduced all the way back in Adventure Comics #357 and have interacted almost exclusively with the Legion.

I kind of wonder: were people more shocked by Supergirl dying or by the Flash dying?
Also: this is obviously overshadowed by the iconic cover of the previous issue, but this is also an amazing Perez cover.

The Legion shows up en masse here, with the team dealing with the effect of all the remaining universes merging. Even Proty II shows up!!!

Brainiac 5 is focused on the attempt to understand what’s going on…

…but it’s only on the surface: Supergirl’s death is naturally affecting him.

And that’s the extent of the Legion’s involvement with the issue; their main reaction to the Crisis will be shown in the regular series.

Legion significance: 10/10
Even though Supergirl’s influence on the Legion faded considerably over the years, her death is such a big thing that will even impact them post-Crisis.

Silver Age-ness: 0/10
Definitely not.

Does it stand the test of time? 10/10
While this isn’t a true review, I maintain the score of the original. A true masterpiece.

We are legion
24 active Legionnaires
7 reserve members
11 deceased members
3 resigned members
1 honorary member
46 people have been members
48 people have been rejected
