Legionnaires #27

Legionnaires #27 (1995)
written by Tom Peyer & Tom McCraw
pencils by Mike Collins
cover by Jeff Moy

The White Triangle plot has been in the background since the start of the Reboot, but this is when it comes to the front.

We begin with an alien ship being destroyed before it can enter a Stargate.

Specifically, the ship was destroyed by a bunch of Daxamites… who have only just started.

This looks like a job for R.J.Brande!

Live Wire shows up, not to ask to return the Legion but looking for help to track his brother.

Brande can’t give him a passage through a Stargate, with everything going on, but he can inform him that Saturn Girl is in the hospital. Apparently nobody bothered to tell him.

The White Triangle situation on Earth is degenerating, as they’re now just killing random aliens in the streets.

Notice that the Star Trek easter eggs are continuing even with guest artists.

Speaking of the White Triangle, didn’t we leave last issue with a cliffhanger?

Cosmic Boy is showing a tremendous amount of faith in Andromeda, considering her attitude up to this point.

I don’t think she’s going to, Cosmic Boy.

Convinced that she’s going to be expelled from the team, Andromeda contacts Daxam… which gets the attention of a new big player.

Who is the Reboot version of Roxxas, of all people!!!
He shares little with his original and his 5YL incarnations beyond the name and something I won’t spoil just yet.

He’s still very much a bad guy though, so you can imagine that the opportunity to give him permanent Daxamite powers is just terrible news.

Meanwhile Saturn Girl is still very much not okay.

Never thought Saturn Girl would be a sore loser. To be fair to her, she literally has brain damage.

Don’t shop in there, girls, those are obviously off-brand: they are absolutely not Forte originals.

Cute sight gag with the classic Phantom Girl costume, but why put it next to the Amethyst and Shrinking Violet costumes? I guess Light Lass didn’t really have an outfit that was iconic enough.

The only thing more dangerous than dating a Legionnaire is her friends.

These two are going to be a MAJOR source of drama throughout the entire Reboot.
It’s far from a healthy relationship, and in fact it does have A TON of problems… which is exactly why it’s my absolute favorite representation of this specific couple.
In real life? I’d tell both that this is toxic on both ends.
In comics? Give me the drama!

Still, even the worst detractors of this romance wouldn’t shoot at them!!!
Well, mostly. Reboot Ultra Boy does have some surprisingly vocal anti-fans.

These guys sure are dedicated to their bigotry; Ultra Boy and Apparition don’t even look like they’re from different planets!

It is a bit funny that across all continuities Ultra Boy is one of the most protectives towards his (eventual) girlfriend… when she’s arguably the Legionnaire with the lowest risk of being injured.

The team is saved by the stylish return of Live Wire.

And finally, we close with Cosmic Boy once again discovering that kicking a Legionnaire out of the team is surprisingly difficult.

Legion significance: 9/10
The White Triangle situation keeps heating up, and it will reach the boiling point next time.
Quite literally.

Silver Age-ness: 0/10
Not really.

Does it stand the test of time? 9/10
Nothing groundbreaking, but the standard level of quality of this era that manages to juggle multiple plots without feeling too crowded… in fact the story goes by a little TOO quickly.
The guest artist is not even all that noticeable; Mike Collins looks so much like Jeff Moy that I wondered if he was working off his layouts, but if that’s the case Moy is not credited so probably not.

Who did it better?
This is effectively the third version of Roxxas. The 5YL was SUPPOSED to be the same guy, but come on, that was Roxxas in name only.
No spoilers on what he’s going to do, but needless to say he’s already a vast improvement over his 5YL self despite having done nothing so far.

We are legion
Live Wire has not yet officially rejoined.

  • 12 active Legionnaires (3 volunteers, 9 drafted)
  • 1 sick leave (Saturn Girl)
  • 1 resigned member
  • 1 deceased member
  • 15 people have been members
  • 2 Legion leaders (Leviathan, Cosmic Boy)
  • 2 members have been rejected

  1. There was a Club Stargate very early in the reboot IIRC, but is this the first clear occurrence of actual stargates in some version of the Legion?

    1. I’m not sure what you mean. Before the Reboot we didn’t really get Stargates, FTL travel seemed to work differently.
In the Reboot, Stargates were introduced in the very first story and have been referenced several times.
This issue, however, is the first time we see a Stargate as a physical object.

  2. I thought that was a bucky o’hare reference behind Diana. I figure not though 😔. I wonder if the Enwan was supposed to tie into the science police character who I’ve already forgotten the name of.

    1. I think that was Officer Deacon, in plainclothes. The Enwans do seem to be an interesting race, at least visually. It’s too bad she was such an uninteresting example.
