L.E.G.I.O.N. #68-70

While the Legion was just waiting for Zero Hour, the L.E.G.I.O.N. series was doing its own thing.
Ultra Boy shows up in the last 3 issues, so we’re going to have a look at his contribution.
This is also an introduction to Tom Peyer, who will be a significant writer for the early Reboot.

At the end of the issue, a Time Bubble™ shows up in the 20th century, on planet Cairn.

I have to wonder: L.E.G.I.O.N. was pretty disconnected from the Legion of Super-Heroes, so how many readers recognized this was Ultra Boy?

One thing that both L.E.G.I.O.N. and Legion readers were certainly eager for was the resolution of the lingering Phantom Girl plot.

As mentioned I won’t be talking about the L.E.G.I.O.N. plots, but there’s a few of them since it looks like the writers knew in advance the series would end with #70.

Ultra Boy shows up with the subtlety you expect.

Hey the cover scene DOES happen! It’s been a while.

One of the recurring points of these last issues is that everyone is leaving L.E.G.I.O.N.
It’s easy to dismiss this today, with the knowledge of the upcoming reboot, but I have to wonder: did readers assume Phase was going to become Phantom Girl again and move back to the 30th century?

And then several pages later (after a bunch of other plots), we’re suddenly told that Phase is NOT Phantom Girl despite appearances to the contrary.

This is WEIRD. All clues pointed to Phase being an amnesiac Phantom Girl… because she WAS supposed to be Phantom Girl until this moment… but all of a sudden: nope, she’s someone else!

And the answer to the mystery of Phase’s identity, something that has been lingering for the past SIXTY ISSUES… is that she’s just Phantom Girl’s cousin.

That’s far from the only weirdness associated with Phase: just ten issues later, she met the 20th century ancestors of her planet.

Seriously, after Mon-El met the S&M ancestors of Cosmic Boy, what is it with 1993 and 1994 coming up with unnecessary backstories involving weirdos for the Legion worlds?

It is interesting to learn that Phase, who was probably the most well-adjusted L.E.G.I.O.N. member, used to be a money-obsessed scoundrel.

As we’ve already seen, the reason for Phantom Girl’s death was that she was targeted by Glorith.

I’m assuming Tom Peyer had just about the same respect for Glorith that I have.

Ultra Boy wants to return Phase to the 30th century with him…

…which she understandably isn’t sure about, considering she made a life for herself in the 20th century.

Despite the fact that this is a bad period for the L.E.G.I.O.N.

Too bad that time travel is currently running on the No Spoiler Principle.

Still, Ultra Boy takes her into the future.

Except she later shows up to help her teammates: she phased out of the Time Bubble™.

Legion significance: 2/10
This isn’t the last time we’ll see Phase in the retrospective, but it will take QUITE some time.
Because while she technically originates in the 5YL continuity, she will continue to appear in other incarnations of L.E.G.I.O.N. (including its spinoff R.E.B.E.L.S.) for years.
Which means that, after having been implicitly a time-displaced Phantom Girl and then retconned into having been her cousin… we will see her again in the Reboot where her real identity will be retconned A THIRD TIME.

Silver Age-ness: N/A
Does it stand the test of time? N/A
Obviously I’ve skipped way too much to give this a proper score. I do recommend the L.E.G.I.O.N. series; it’s pretty great, if you can get past the atrocious artwork of its final run.
The retcon of Phase being Phantom Girl’s cousin is incredibly rushed. I suppose it couldn’t be helped, if they wanted to keep her in the team… which I agree on, Phase was a good character.
Ideally they should have dedicated more time to it, because it REALLY comes out of nowhere; I understand they didn’t have the space for it, since these issue are also dealing with a bunch of other end-of-series stuff… but it’s still clunky.

Still worth it for the chance to crap on Glorith, though.

  1. From Day One, Legion fans knew that Phase was Tinya. The books made it very clear that the Durlan was bumped to the 30th century, where he became R.J. Brande, and as an equivalent exchange, Tinya was bumped to the 20th century, to become Phase.

Making Phase be Enya instead allowed the character to continue post-Zero Hour, but it wasn’t a solution any fan liked. Of course, there’s always another retcon to come, especially for the Legion.

L.E.G.I.O.N., on the other hand, has never been wholesale rebooted. It continues on with its original continuity, interacting in greater or lesser ways with every incarnation of the Legion.

Bgtzlian women do seem to be strangely popular in the DCU, since later Linya Wazzo becomes a member of the Terrifics. She only recently returned to Bgtzl in an issue of Justice League Unlimited.
